Why DOS Based Software ??

Why Not?!  These are simple, specific programs that will run with any version of Windows (under the DOS  prompt ) as well as DOS itself. This includes the latest version, Windows 7.  They will also run loaded on any media type such as the hard drive, CD rom, floppy disk, etc. using a minimal amount of memory.

The best part is the price - - I am making them available as Freeware!  Why? Use them; and if you like what they do and would be interested in an expanded windows version; let me know.  If I get enough request I will make one available at a nominal fee.

Spreadsheets vs Databases

Spreadsheets are heavily used today for a wide variety of applications.  Consisting of rows and columns.  They are fairly easy to set up and extremely versatile for saving and calculating small to medium volumes of data.

Databases, consisting of fields and records are normally used for larger volumes of data.  They handle data pretty much the same way spreadsheets do, but are far more complicated to set up.  They have the ability to search and retrieve select records from a very large volume of data.

When should you consider using a database instead of a spreadsheet?  If it is a one time, once in a while, or temporary need; then a spreadsheet is the way to go.  If you are using a spreadsheet on a regular daily basis, then you should probably consider using a database.  Spreadsheets can be compared to snowflakes.  One or two files landing on your hard drive or server, present no problem.  After daily use however, they can build up to use a lot of valuable real estate on your server or hard drive.  Database files do grow in size but not as large as hundreds of individual spreadsheet files.  It is also far easier to go back and retrieve data from a database than hundreds of individual spreadsheet files.
